“Go Bucks!” Jayden Davis Chooses Ohio State
Commitment to the Buckeyes
“Go Bucks!” says Ohio State commit Jayden “JJ” Davis. Davis, a class of 2027 catcher and utility player from Kenton Ridge High School in Springfield, Ohio, announced her commitment last night. She was kind enough to speak briefly with me about her decision and her background.
Davis spoke highly of the Buckeyes and called it an easy choice. Not only is Ohio State close to home, but having that name across her chest carries meaning beyond words.
“For me, Ohio State was an easy choice because Ohio is home. My family, my friends, and my biggest supporters are here, and being able to wear ‘Ohio State’ across my chest means so much,” said Davis.
Building Culture in Columbus
The culture is always a main factor in any decision, and Davis wants to be a part of what Ohio State is building.
“I also felt an immediate connection with the coaching staff, Coach 2K, Coach Matt, Coach Courtney, and Coach Spaid. The culture they’re building is special, and what they accomplished in just one year really stood out to me. I knew I wanted to be a part of where this program is headed and help build something even bigger.”
Family Influence
JJ is fortunate to have loving and supportive parents who know what hard work is like and what it takes to reach the next level. Her mom is a Hall of Fame two-sport collegiate athlete, and her dad is retired military and now a coach.
“Sports have always been a huge part of my life. Both of my parents were collegiate athletes, and they’ve played a huge role in shaping me not only as a player but also as a competitor,” said Davis.
“My dad, who is retired military and now coaches softball at Wittenberg University, has taught me discipline, preparation, and how to handle the mental side of the game.”
“My mom, a Hall of Fame basketball and volleyball player at Shawnee State University, has shown me what it means to compete at the highest level and carry yourself with confidence.”
Training With a Buckeye Connection
Jayden also benefits from having people around her who sharpen her skills. Ashley Goodwin, a former Buckeye herself, knows what it is like to play in Columbus and now helps guide Davis.
“I’ve also been fortunate to train with Coach Ashley Goodwin, my hitting coach and current head coach at Wittenberg University. She’s an Ohio State softball alum and has really helped me take my hitting to the next level, especially when it comes to consistency and adding power at the plate. I can’t thank her enough for her impact on my development,” Davis said.
Gratitude and Faith
Davis never takes her opportunities for granted and always gives credit where it is due.
“Most importantly, I want to always thank God for blessing me with the ability to play the game I love at such a high level. I don’t take that for granted, and I know every opportunity I’ve been given comes from Him.”
Kenton Ridge Experience
While she still has time before arriving in Columbus, Davis is proud to represent Kenton Ridge High School and values what her program has given her.
“Playing for Kenton Ridge High School has been like no other experience. We’re a young team, but we’re loaded with talent, including multiple Division I-caliber players. That level of competition pushes me every single day to keep improving and striving for greatness,” said Davis.
“Our coaching staff is organized, practices are productive, and the standard they set keeps us sharp and focused on getting better as a team.”
Improvements Ahead
JJ knows there is always room for improvement and has a clear vision for her growth.
“Looking ahead, I want to continue to grow in every area of my game, physically, technically, and mentally. I’m focused on becoming stronger and faster, while also improving my softball IQ and confidence in high-pressure moments. My goal is to arrive at Ohio State ready to compete at the highest level and make an immediate impact for the Buckeyes.”
