Sometimes in life, our original plans take a turn, and we end up where we were destined to be. Athletes deal with that quite often, especially new collegiate commits.

Hallie Grace Johnson recently committed to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, but that wasn’t her original plan. Johnson first committed to Radford University in December 2025, but six months later, coach Kevin Fagan announced his departure. That ultimately sent Johnson looking elsewhere.

“I was in the middle of a tournament, Scenic City,” Johnson said. “I first saw the news from an outside source. Then the coach called me later that day to talk me through it. It was a wild experience because it wasn’t something I’d expected, and I’d grown really close with that coaching staff.”

That closeness made the uncertainty a bit scary, at first. After all that time of building relationships, Johnson had to start again. What carried her through was the group of people she leaned on.

“I was really lucky to have a great support staff around me,” Johnson said. “My parents, my pitching coach, my travel coach, my teammates, all of the above. The unknown is really hard, but knowing I had people around me who believe in me and trust me was so important.”

Johnson waited to see where things landed at Radford before making any decisions. Once the program hired its new staff, she gave them an honest look. In the end, she actually came away impressed, even as she recognized the fit had changed.

With having great people in her corner, once that connection was made with newly hired Mocs head coach Donald Pickett, everything took off.

“It all happened so quickly, but I met with him, went on a visit, and once I got on campus, it was exactly where I knew I was meant to be,” Johnson said.

Chattanooga also brought Johnson a little closer to home. Radford sits in Virginia, roughly three and a half hours from Johnson’s home in Farragut, Tenn. Chattanooga is a straight shot down Interstate 75. Therefore, it cuts about two hours off that drive for Johnson, her family and her friends.

“I’m a big homebody,” Johnson said. “I love my family and the town I grew up in, so being that close is so special. Being able to come home on a weekend or watch my brother’s baseball games. When I told my parents’ friends and my friends, they were like, oh my gosh, we can come watch you play now.”

Playing in Chattanooga carries a familiarity. She spent much of her travel career competing in the city. As a result, that history made the decision feel like an easy one.

“Knowing what it means to play in Chattanooga since we played there so much growing up, it’s so special,” Johnson said. “I already have that community, and I know what to expect.”

Johnson had not crossed paths with Pickett before the recruitment. However, everything she heard spoke volumes.

Also, having her pitching coach, Brandon Carr, nearby gives Johnson easy access to more instruction. Carr coaches at nearby Chattanooga State, giving Johnson her familiar resource whenever she needs to sharpen something.

“I could go over there and get a lesson in if I need a fine tune,” Johnson said. “It’ll be awesome to have that resource.”

As a Class of 2027 prospect, Johnson will not arrive on campus until next fall. This year has already reshaped her. A move to a new travel team allowed her to play across the country against elite competition. Moreover, it has changed the way she carries herself.

“That team has pushed me more than I ever thought I’d be pushed, such as playing in the National Power Pool in Colorado and Alliance Nationals in Indiana,” Johnson said. “It’s taught me independence, the importance of perseverance, and how to recover my body when I get back into town.”

The growth showed up off the field too. Johnson describes herself as someone who used to stay in the background. Now she’s found her voice more and ability to communicate more.

“I used to be super introverted, but being around all these new girls pushed me to speak up more and grow as a leader,” Johnson said. “That’s something I can carry into high school ball.”

Those leadership skills will show up this year at Farragut, one of the strongest programs in the Knoxville area and the state. Johnson earned All-State and Region 4-4A Pitcher of the Year honors. She credits the daily grind of high school ball, under head coach Nick Green, for the development that travel ball alone cannot provide.

“In travel ball you definitely see improvement on the field, but high school is really where the development happens,” Johnson said. “You have practice every day, you’re with your teammates all the time, and that’s where you grow. That’s the community and support you’ll need in college to get through the long days, weeks, and weekends.”

Johnson enters her senior season expecting to lead alongside a group that has been together for years.

“I know what it takes to be the best and to play against the best,” Johnson said. “I want to use that to push the girls and push myself.”

For Johnson, the roots run all the way back to youth ball in the Knoxville area. A decision to trade baseball for softball set everything in motion. She played baseball until she was 7 or 8, the only girl in her league. Then, she found her place in CBFO.

“That’s honestly where I learned to love the game, because it was just so much fun,” Johnson said. “My best friend right now, my catcher, played with me at CBFO, and that’s how we met. Those are lifelong friendships that have held through elementary, middle, and high school, and I know they’ll hold through college.”

CBFO gave Johnson more than teammates. It gave her a blueprint for the kind of player she wanted to become. Now a younger generation looks up to her the same way she once looked up to the older girls.

“The community they build over there is so special. Almost everyone around our area who grew up here played at CBFO,” Johnson said. “Looking up to those girls when I was little made me want to work so much harder to play at their level. It’ll forever hold a special place in my heart.”

The road to Chattanooga bent in a direction Johnson never saw coming. However, the destination fits like it was always meant to be. She is close to home, surrounded by the people who raised her in the game, and ready for what comes next.
