The Rawlings Gold Glove Award made a long-awaited return to pro softball. On Sunday, prior to Game 3 of the AUSL All-Star Cup Series 2, Sydney Romero was announced as the winner.
Romero made history as the first Athletes Unlimited Softball player to win the award.
“Sydney embodies everything the Rawlings Gold Glove Award represents,” said Mike Thompson, chief marketing officer at Rawlings, via statement. “Her instincts, athleticism, consistency, and leadership set the standard for defensive excellence throughout the AUSL season. We are proud to recognize her as the first-ever AUSL Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner and celebrate the impact she continues to make on the sport.”
Romero won the award over Jadelyn Allchin and Alyssa Brito, who were announced as finalists on Wednesday, August 12. Romero was fantastic for the Oklahoma City Spark and led all shortstops in the AUSL with 45 assists, 5 double plays and a .974 fielding percentage. Romero recorded 30 putouts and committed just 2 errors this season.
