Hannah Evans is Set for Year Three at the FGCL

It is only the beginning of December, and collegiate softball players are already claiming their spots across the different American Collegiate Leagues for next summer. These leagues run for a month between June and July, and applications have been open since early September.

I spoke with Fastpitch United Director of Operations, Caylan Elliott, a little over a week ago about why these leagues matter, not only for experienced college players but also for incoming freshmen who have already signed. It comes down to gaining more opportunities to work on your craft before returning to campus in August, and there are plenty of friendships and experiences to build along the way.

Caylan Elliott speaks on the American Collegiate League

One of the most popular leagues is the Florida Gulf Coast League in Bradenton, Florida. I also had the chance to speak with East Carolina University’s Hannah Evans about her decision to return to the FGCL. Evans is set for her third year in the league in 2026.

When asked why she chose the FGCL, Evans had nothing but praise for the league. She made it sound like a no brainer.

Kentucky freshman pitcher Hailey Nutter enters transfer portal

“I have played in the FGCL for 2 summers now and it is by far the best experience ever. I love how much competition there is within the league and how much you grow as an athlete. I have made friendships of a lifetime there and will continue to this summer.”

She also talked about how the work she puts in during the summer directly helps her once the fall season rolls around, especially by seeing live action against high level competition.

“I see this experience benefiting me going into next fall because it gives me multiple opportunities to see live pitching all year round and better my game.”

The FGCL was her top choice, and she added that her college coach recommended it. That speaks volumes about the level of play and the proven development the league has produced over the years.

Evans is an outfielder for ECU, and she looks forward to showing off that arm strength.

“I am most excited to showcase my arm in the outfield and everything I have worked on in the off season.”

As more collegiate players secure their summer spots, players like Evans show exactly why these leagues matter. The competition, the development, the friendships, and the chance to keep sharpening your game in meaningful reps all add up. For athletes looking to elevate before returning to campus, the FGCL and the rest of the American Collegiate League destinations could be the way to go.
