As the season comes down the back stretch, the Carolina Blaze continue to miss a huge piece to their puzzle in utility Kayla Kowalik. A lower-half injury placed her on the injured list on June 24, a few days after suffering a hamstring issue against the Chicago Bandits.
Carolina Blaze head coach Kara Dill gave an update on Kowalik after the series finale with the Utah Talons, Saturday night.
“She’s day-to-day right now,” Dill said. “We expect her to get back in the lineup as quickly as possible. She took some at-bats today and felt fine. She’s working through that process, but she’s day-to-day right now. We’re keeping our fingers crossed, and some point soon she’ll be back on the field for us.”
While Reese Atwood is handling the catching duties tremendously, day-in and day-out, the Blaze mostly miss Kowalik in the batting order. At the time of her leave, she led the team in hits and slashed .400/.444/.480 in eight games played. As the Blaze head into their last 10 games of the regular season, they will need all hands on deck to keep their standing in the playoff race.
