Series 2 of the AUSL All-Star Cup got underway in Rosemont, Ill., on Friday night. It was another night of supreme pitching and defense as Team Klingler defeated Team Ricketts 1-0.
Sam Landry gave a fantastic start, throwing 4.2 innings of 2-hit ball with no runs allowed. Landry struck out 3 while issuing just 1 walk. Her stuff was effective, and in 17 batters faced, 10 were retired via groundout. Landry finished the night with MVP 1 honors.
Team Klingler scored the one run on a passed ball in the top of the third inning that allowed Bubba Nickles-Camarena to score from third. Nickles-Camarena reached third on a two-out triple. That earned her an MVP 2 selection. To that point, Karlyn Pickens had retired eight in a row to start the game.
Pickens was phenomenal for Team Ricketts. She threw 4.0 innings with 1 run on 2 hits and struck out 5. Pickens threw just 37 pitches before handing the ball to Keilani Ricketts, who finished the night with 3.0 innings of 1-hit ball.
This game came down to fantastic work in the circle and on the defensive side. Hannah Flippen earned the defensive MVP of the game, and Lexi Kilfoyl also picked up MVP 3 honors for her work in relief.
With Friday night’s dominant outing by Landry, she rose 30 spots to the No. 2 spot behind captain Baylee Klingler. Nickles-Camarena rose 23 spots, with Kilfoyl and Flippen jumping 21 and 14 spots, respectively. The top five with point breakdown is below.
